My cousin Lacie has a little 4 yr old that has recently been diagnosed with leukemia. It has been really hard on them, and some people are looking for ways to help them. I stumbled on a blog entry the other day that was about Taylie (the little girl) and I was very touched by it. I thought I would pass it on. This lady was out for a run and got thinking about Taylie -whom she has never met- and came up with a way she could help. She found a donor that would pay $2 for every blog entry and tweet and facebook mention of Taylie and her website. so I thought I would share it here...

The SEVEN letter word...

Sorry, this is not business oriented. But here it is anyway....

The 4 letter words!

Isn't it funny how you almost know what words people are talking about when they refer to swear words this way?

WHAT IS the seven letter word? What am I referring to? I have been thinking today alot about it too...DISEASEI have a cousin that is amazing. She is so cute and fun and full of life. She is a few years younger than me, so I have watched her grow up. I remember her as a little gal trailing behind the big kids. Then I got to watch as she chose a vocation and a hubby! She always looks adorable since she chose to be a beautician. I had most of my family before she started hers, but her little ones are the same age as my younger two kiddos. I just want to cry when I think about the heartache she has facing her. Her oldest one Taylie has just been diagnosed with Leukemia. (and not the nicer of the two kinds either.) On top of her hubby being away when she found out, she is pregnant and due in Sept. Pretty hard huh? I worry about her and wish I could help, but really besides $$ all I can do it pray and be there for her and her little family when can.

So I would like to ask you to pray for my cousin Lacie and her poor little Taylie. I did put a link on my side bar to get to the blog they are going to do for her. There is not much there now, but you can check back and get updates! Isn't it nice to believe in a higher power and know that we have a loving Heavenly Father that know and understands all we go through. I don't know if I would make it though life without this knowledge.

Mattel- the main reason this law was enacted is exempt from 3rd party testing. They are able to offer "their own" testing on site. Which despite them being the biggest toy mfg in the world, and able to afford 3rd party it also gives them an edge which makes them able to "skew" the results as they have in the past. So the big guns who can afford to pay for the 3rd party testing are exempt, and the little people aren't? Well, sadly that is lobbying shown in it's true light.

Please write as many people in your political circle as you can!

I am very frustrated with my trainers. I can't seem to ge the sizing right. I make them the size the people ask for and then they never fit. I think it is the fact that the hemp doesn't stretch. It is very frustrating. So I am dropping them. They take longer to make than diapers and I get less for them. So with this extra frustration they aren't on my list anymore. :(

I took a few weeks off of sewing, and I sure was dreading pulling out all my stuff. Let me tell you why. I have decided it isn't because I don't like to do the sewing, but I because I don't have the room. I have 6 kids and we live in a little 3 bedroom modular home. I don't really have room for all the fabric that I need to have to keep up with the business. here are a few pics of what we live with because I do this...

It is too fun to hear someone say that my diaper is their fave, and that everyone that sees the baby in them thinks they are too cute. I really do enjoy all of it, but the space issue. I hope to someday have a house that is big enough that I can have a room all my own for sewing! :)

my beginnings...

So I was asked the other day what inspires me to make what I make.
I think that is kinda hard to pin-point. I am obsessed with cloth diapers... have been since day one.
When we were in college, (you know those days? ) money was pretty tight. We had two little ones in diapers and we were spending a huge chunk of our grocery $$ on them. I really don't know where the idea came from ...
...actually now that I think of it, I didn't go looking for them. I just stumbled onto them. I was looking for a good nursing bra, the store that I went to had a pattern for cloth diapers. It was just a little shop in a small town. The gal had all the diaper flannel and everything. I was there with my mom, and she said if I wanted to give it a try she would fund the project. We walked out of the store with flannel and velcro and the pattern. A stop off at Wal-mart and we had plastic pants too (can't believe I used those nasty things). A few hrs sewing and I had some fitteds to use they were just a basic side snapping fitted in flannel. I sewed a soaker down the middle and there they were.
They saved us alot of $$ right off. YEAH!! I will continue this another day! Just wanted to share where I began.

In my weeks off I decided to do a crochet tutorial. My first ever, so here goes...

Let your child's inner animal come out. I have 6 kiddos and they love to pretend to be all sorts of animals. I saw a pattern for horse reins, and thought what a great idea. I made one up and it is ok, but I thought I could simplify the pattern to be faster to work up and maybe be a little more durable!

So here is my Animal Tamer....

you will need:

small amount worsted weight yarn in 2 contrasting colors

G hook

scissors

needle for sewing in ends

*see the end of post for pictures of cross over and dec.

Body:

with MC

Chain 31

row 1 sc in second chain from hook and across, ch2 turn

row 2-4 dc across, ch2 turn

row 5 (cross over design) dc in next 6 dcs, *skip next open st, dc in st, dc back into skipped st*, repeat from * to * 8 times (should have 9 cross overs), dc in next 7 st, ch 2 turn

row 6-7 dc across, ch2 turn

row 8-9 dc dec. over first two sts, dc across decreasing in the last two sts, ch2 turn

over head loop

add in your coordinating color

hold both colors of yarn throughout the end

Ch 40

attach to the other top corner with a sc

sc back across the top (using both yarns)

continue sc down the side to the bottom

Reins

Ch 250 then attach to the other bottom corner
sc back up the other side

finish off

sew in ends with the needle.

There you have it!

cross over stitch:

skip one stitch and dc in the next stitch then cross back and dc in the skipped stitch

skip the next open stitch and dc in the next ... continue the pattern

finished stitch

dc dec stitch (double crochet decrease)

YO and insert in next st pick up yarn and pull through

pick up next stitch, pick up yarns and pull through

you should now have 4 loops on your hook.

pick up yarn and pull through 3 loops

pick up yarn and pull through last 2 loops

There you have it!

TIME!!!

I am trying to figure out how to get my time all lined out. I feel that I am doing my sewing all the time and everything has to take a back burner to it. That isn't what I want though.
My family is really important to me. I want to be able to spend time with the kids not get all ornery cause I stayed up late with diapers or something isn't working like I need it to.
I also have many other hobbies that I feel like I haven't had time for. I want to be able to quilt with my friends, do some scrapbooking, or not feel guilty when I am sitting down doing a little crocheting that isn't a soaker.

How do you ladies all do it? I don't want to just give up, but I don't feel that I have my priorities right and I am not ok with that.
Any ideas?

One of the ideas I have had is to sell a "Sew your own diaper" kit. I would cut out all the fabrics and the elastics and such and then I would have a tutorial video on my webpage to help them out.

What do you think of that idea?

I am also having issues with the whole lead testing and labeling things. That is a major thorn in my side.

Ahhhh.... sorry I just had to vent my feelings somewhere. Any suggestions or advice would be welcomed!

Well really it is not that bad. I am supposed to write 10 things about me and then tag 10 people. so here goes I guess.

1. I grew up in Utah
2. All I ever wanted to be when I grew up was a mom. I am so lucky to have a wonderful, supportive hubby that lets me stay home and do that.
3. I really love Skittles! They are probably my fave candy
4. I love to watch Matlock while my kids take a nap.

6. I have more fabric than one person should have and I live in a little 3 bedroom with my hubby and 6 kids!

A first for my NOOK!

So I sold a couple swim diapers to a gal the other day, but that isn't the cool part. The cool part is that she lives in Croatia! how fun huh? My first overseas sale! I am excited!

I must admit that I do have an order for diapers that I am working on right now that is for a gal in New Zealand too, but I haven't sent that yet so...

The name game is going good too! I have had lots of names sent my way and I hope to get more before the time is up!

Man I have had a tons of fun new names for my swim diapers! This has been so fun. I have also had like 6 orders today! I will have to do some serious sewing tomorrow huh? I love these, they are so cute. They have a PUL layer sandwiched between microfleece and either a flannel or a cotton knit. They have 4 sets of snaps so you can custom fit this diaper to your baby. I love that they have side snaps for when there are poopers you have to change.

My improved wool wrap

I am calling it the Woolie Wrap. I had a wrap pattern, I just made up a diaper a little bigger, but I have had a little feedback and so I improved the pattern. I gave the leg a little more coverage. I am excited about it. The pattern usually fits on a sweater, so I am not waisting to much wool. They are double layered, so they are more absorbent. They should be bullet proof!

These are the yarns that I have available right now. They are all wool. They are fun yarns and I am excited about starting on some more crocheted soakers.

I have gotten my Nifty Knickers pattern all written up and tested by a few folks. I am excited about taking it to the next level and figuring out the math to make it different sizes -

How exciting. My cute little trainers were featured today on etsy. I am so excited that they thought they were cute enough to go into the treasury. It was so fun to get the convo and read that my trainers had been picked. There are lots of other adorable items in the feature too. I made more diapers on Sat. i have to finish putting snaps on them, and then i need to take pictures. I am excited to list them, they are adorable fabrics.

Basically she suggested I not be so wordy in my titles and my descriptions. I think that as soon as I get my webpage all done I will link to it and cut out a lot of the technical info I have on my descriptions.
She liked my pictures and suggested I change my banner to something more simple along with the avatar. I just need to figure out how. If you have any ideas send them this way. She suggested something sewing or a pict of my notions or something simple like that.
So, I am excited. I also had a lady that wants me to make some blankets for her organic baby bedding shop. that will be fun!
Alot of good things are happening right now. I am so blessed!

So I was perusing etsy today looking for patterns and I bought a few from a gal. She told me I was the person who bought her 1,000 item and so I got to spend $50 on her etsy shop. I had a blast looking though her patterns and yarns. I am excited to make some of these and sell them. You can look for them to come soon. I am also working on better pictures. We'll see where that takes us.

Also I have been working on making up a few of my own patterns. Gotta find a few testers for them and then I will sell them too!

Lead Testing! AHHHHHH!

My thought on this run deep, so just a few....
1. Two people are deciding the fate of all WAHMS, and many small businesses - there is something wrong with that!

2. If 90% of the lead tainted toys come from on place-I'm not naming countries- then you would think to solve the problem you would place testing requirements on them and not all the good Americans that are trying to either help make a living or to pay for a hobby that they love.

3. Only two people really!!!!!

In the mean time there will be more items coming from my nook for the next year. I am looking forward to the "Nifty Nappy"-the new name for my diapers. Cute huh?

New materials!

I found me some new yarns to use here recently. I have some acrylics to use for hats I think they will look nice.

These are my wool yarns that I got to make soakers out of. I am excited to start on these. They are super soft yarns!

I also got to make a stop at DI to get more sweaters. These will make some more fun woolies!

These bookmarks are very fun to make. We discovered them while visiting Grandma Dastrup. They are great for kids. They make reading fun! The fit small books to large books. These two bookmarks are the same size. Fun huh?

The Diapers are here!

I finally got around to making my diapers I have been very excited about! They are amazingly absorbent and dang cute if I do say so myself. The make up of the diaper is organic bamboo velour, certified organic hemp fleece, 100% cotton knit (or flannel), and microfleece. The inserts are very absorbent being a layer of bamboo velour and a layer of hemp fleece. The diapers are serged around the edges sot there are no layers folding in to wick out moisture. Paired with a wool cover these are the perfect diaper for anyone!

With resin snaps they just snap right on the baby. The easy of disposables, without the expense.

These are the fabrics I have to make girl diapers, cute huh? I love the Chicks!

So we had a great Christmas at Vilate's Nifty Nook. We sold a couple hats for gifts and a ton of soakers. In fact we sold so many that I was down to like one sweater. So I made a trip to the city to buy more sweaters. I have tons of cute sweaters now and I am so excited about all the cute woolies they will make. I have already made a few, but my lap top died. I can't edit the pictures on my mac small enough to post the pictures on etsy. I need to figure out somehting so I can list more woolies! Well, I'll try and get them up for the new year.

Projects in Progress. . .

I have a couple projects in progress. When I was taking pictures of the soakers and longies I had finished I snapped a few of some of my projects. I also have 5 or 6 soakers and longies cut out and started, that is a day long project though. Just gotta wait for a free day to pop into my schedule! Haha!

These are some cute legwarmers I started on. They are a bigger size, more for a preteen or teen. Just gotta get some crochet time in. But right now I am working on a soaker for a lady, so they sit and wait.

This is another of the

"Lewania's Purse". I think these are cute colors and I am excited to finish this. I think I need to come up with another name for it. I think that people think that it is a purse reserved for Lewania. So any suggestions?

So I have quite a few things I am excited about. I have a gal that wants my to make a soaker for her, and I sold my crocheted one. I also have a little bitty soaker done to post soon. I have a pretty large order for my diapers, so I have been sewing away at them, I am half way done. I will finish them Wed.

My etsy shop looks so cute since I had Mia, of Misa's Graphic Design, design me a banner, avatar, thankyou, and a business card. I really like what she came up with for me. She was really great to work with!

I picked up some more sweaters the other night and I am excited about the soakers and longies they will make! My friend that I went with to the city said that now she is always going to stop and look through the sweaters and blankets when she goes to thrift stores, she had fun looking with me.

I am excited about how my shop is growing, so far it has paid for itself, so that is good.

By the way Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I have so much to be thankful for this season!

Yeah, I sold my real "Green" soaker! This is very exciting to me, maybe I should explain that Lewania bought "Lewania's Purse", so this is my first official sale to someone I don't know!

I also got my banner and avatar, and business cards from Mia today! They are very cute and I am happy with them. I just have to post them up now. My internet is very slow tonight, so it might have to wait until tomorrow.

I finished them! They are really cute and way soft, I love them. They look cute on my baby too. They are about a size 12-18 months. Made with 100% wool yarn. I need to lanolize them and then they will be posted for sale on my shop. I hope somebody else likes them as much as me.

I realized that my pictures for the jewelry aren't very good, so I borrowed my mother in law's camera and now I am trying to get pics on to this computer via my laptop since the card isn't reading in my printer card slot, we'll see if we can get it to work on the lap top!. Wish me luck.

My first three things are up now! I am so excited. The pictures aren't very good though. I just used my scanner, so some color is distorted. My nice camera takes pictures that the quality is too high on and my little cameras battery is dead and my charger doesn't work anymore. I did order a new charger, just haven't gotten it yet. When I do I will take better pictures, but I thought I have an open shop I should have a few things for sale.

I have to go make lunch and get Hannah ready for school. After the little girls go down for a nap I will try to get my hats up, I got pictures of them before my battery died.
